“It’s Officially ‘Cool’ To Be A Christian”

I am a subscriber to Direct TV, mainly for their selection of “Christian” stations. One of my favorites is GMC, the Gospel Music Channel. They play music videos and concerts most of the day. There is a commercial that has been playing a lot lately that annoys me. it has some teens in it skateboarding and doing other “teen” things. The tag line that is repeated several times in the commercial is, “It’s Officially ‘Cool’ To Be A Christian”.

C’mon. It’s cool to be a Christian? They think this is going to appeal to the younger generation. For me, it was reminiscent of the, “this is your brain on drugs” fried egg commercials from my youth. Hokey.

Have the creators of this commercial read the Bible? the list of people in it who served God that were considered “cool” are definitely in the minority. Plus there are plenty of verses like,

john 15:18-21, “If the world hates you, keep in mind that it hated me first. If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you. Remember the words I spoke to you: ‘No servant is greater than his master.’ If they persecuted me, they will persecute you also. If they obeyed my teaching, they will obey yours also. They will treat you this way because of my name, for they do not know the One who sent me.”

Add to that most of the disciples were martyred.

If you choose to believe in God because you think it is cool, I am afraid you will not last long in the faith. It has to be based on your love for him, no matter the cost.

Luke 14:25-35, “Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple. And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’

“Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with

twenty thousand? If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way

off and will ask for terms of peace. In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

“Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

Sorry, I had to rant for a minute. Cool to be a Christian? Read the news people.
