A Different Gospel?

I heard a sobering statistic the other day, (I wish I knew where you can get the information as I feel like I’m spreading a rumor without a way to confirm it.) something along the lines that 96% of the people who “get saved”, backslide. I look at the kind of men that Jesus’ life produced — Men who eventually gave their physical lives and gave up all they called their own just to follow His teaching. I know that God’s power to change us is eternal. I know that we are new creations and all things have become new. I have to ask myself then, why the difference between His converts and ours? I am left only with the convicting words that we are either not living the life He did so that men may follow that example; or God forbid, we are preaching a different gospel. We have either only lived a tiny bit of what He taught, or we have led others to the feet of our idol called “Christian.”

This goes back to my post about Paul telling Timothy to imitate him. Jesus said those words earlier in John 5:1, “Therefore be imitators of God as dear children.”

I need to go pray now.

Got to say that even Jesus had a backslider – (it is human nature ) don’t know who it was ??? Peter (the rock ) Yep, he denied Christ 3 times !!! turned his back on his calling and walked (no RAN ) away from the truth and the light….. But the good news is not ALL backsliders stay backslidden – I think in our hearts everyone can say they have turned away at some point or another and fallen – BUT the RIGHTEOUS man gets up 7 times – hey must be the righteous will fall at least 7 times – but the wonderfull news is HE GETS UP!!! Jesus told Peter he was going to backslide and also told him that HE, Jesus would be praying for him.( Jesus is constantly at the throne interceeding for us) – That is why the righteous get up :) I wonder if that statistic is more like 99% of Christians backslide- I know in my walk there were times when my heart was far from him…Maybe you couldn’t tell on the outside – I didn’t drink ,smoke, cuss – you know the drill – but He had asked me to obey Him and I didn’t I turned away and RAN ,like Peter,…. I backslid- I wanted what I thought was best , what I felt was right and I made God too small by not trusting him to know what was good and perfect for my life…. I still wanted him , I still read my Bible – but in truth I was backslidden my heart was not where it should have been …..I had made the wrong choice and I had to turn around and go BACK to where the right choice was – Jesus was still holding it out to me – Just a thought ….What was the statistics definition of Backsliding ????? Thanks for making me think ~ AGAIN !

Bro, just read something on this very subject this afternoon. Here is a portion……

The old cross [killed] men; the new cross entertains them. The old cross condemned; the new cross amuses. The old cross destroyed confidence in the flesh; the new cross encourages it. The old cross brought tears and blood; the new cross brings laughter. The flesh, smiling and confident, preaches and sings about the [old] cross; before that cross it bows and toward that cross it points with carefully staged histrionics – but upon that cross it will not die, and the reproach of that cross it stubbornly refuses to bear.

I well know how many smooth arguments can be marshaled in support of the new cross. Does not the new cross win converts and make many followers and so carry the advantage of numerical success? Should we not adjust ourselves to the changing times? Have we not heard the slogan ‘New days, new ways?’ And who but someone very old and very conservative would insist upon death as the appointed way to life?

And who today is interested in a gloomy mysticism that would sentence its flesh to a cross and recommend self-effacing humility as a virtue actually to be practiced [even] by modern Christians? These are the arguments, along with many more flippant still, which are brought forward to give an appearance of wisdom to the hollow and meaningless cross of popular Christianity.

Reenie: You always bring discussion, I love it! I want good conversation here. You bring a good point, I guess it depends on how we are defining backslide. A partial drawback or apostasy? I was thinking along the lines of apostasy. I know the barna group does a lot of christian stats, maybe they have some defining terms they use.

Brian: Wow, what a pageful. Today I was discussing with a friend the thought of the false teaching as judgment. Not that people are seduced by these messages, but that they put them in powerful positions because it is what is really in their hearts.

II Tim 4:2-4 “Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.”

    Thanks for your thoughts!

Bingo Brother Chris….False Teaching is judgment on those that deny the truth…Acts 17:11 should be every Christian Believer’s Creed….Everything has to be judged by the Word…If it isn’t in the Word, it’s the spirit that is promised in these last days that is so close it would deceive the very elected if it were possible…..Matthew 24:24…

The converts of old were drawn by the Word of God and converted by and to the Word, (the Holy Spirit bringing life)…today, many are drawn by programs and the glammer of the world….these last days are said to be the most perilous for people will hold a form of godliness….they will do signs and wonders deceiving and being deceived….2 Timothy 3….

2 Timothy 3:8 – Now just as Jannes and Jambres were hostile to and resisted Moses, so these men also are hostile to and oppose the Truth. They have depraved and distorted minds, and are reprobate and counterfeit and to be rejected as far as the faith is concerned.

Jannes and Jambres could do the same miracles Moses did only they were of the world….2 Thessalonians chapter 2 promises Satan is coming in the last days with “Great” Power and signs and lying wonders to deceive…

Apostle Paul warned the elders in Acts 20:29-31- I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. “Even from your own number” men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.

Great subject Brother…..Thank You for posting!

p.s. Remember, the anti-christ is religious! Satan is the god of this world and wants to be worshiped..he is worshiped through false doctrine and false signs and wonders……his first sermon was to Eve, he twisted the Word of God…he’s still doing it today…..

brian: I am to be the priest of my home, and my heart breaks over my own life, and where I see that I am in error. And I see my kids following, and I hate it. And I pray, God help me. Help me to be like you, and help others to see you in me. Thanks so much for your thoughts.
